Background of the Chair “Economics and social sector management”

Our chair was set up in 1994. It was one of the first chairs in our country that trains experts on social sector management. It was founded by prof. G.A.Karpova, ass. prof. N.N.Ivanov, ass. prof. L.V.Khoreva. The new chair took its nische in the higher education framework since before its creation Russia hadn't graduates in the field of social sector management.

From the very beginning the academic process was strengthened by substantial basis: academic staff of the chair issued the first Russian text-book “Social sector management” acclaimed by the Ministry of Education. Then the post-graduate school and PhD and DSc thesis Council were organized (Over 10 years N.N.Ivanov, V.I.Vilenchik, G.E.Chernov, V.I.Nikiforov obtained DSc degree and O.S.Koroteeva, V.A.Kovsheneva, I.A.Yatskevich, A.G.Popov – PhD degrees). During 3 years comprehensive academic and research work had been carried out for the British Council grant in cooperation with Scottish Queen Margaret University College . This collaboration resulted in the well-though academic curriculum for training of experts on cultural tourism – cultural and tourism training practices were merged.

The other important step implied creation of 2 academic books Scottish and Russian-Scottish published both in Russia and Scotland . The chair is a regular publisher of academic research collections and has already issued more than 10 books (1 per year). Our students studied abroad as exchange students, in particular K.Karadzha and D.Losiev – in Sweden and Almasov - in Finland . As a part of joint Russian-Dutch universities programme on facility-management at the chair set-up N.N.Ivanov, V.E.Gordin went on study to Holland . As a result they worked out one of the first courses on facility management (i. å . enterprises infrastructural service management), over several years the lectures on this subject are delivered by N.N.Ivanov.

It's highly important that the majority of our academic staff works with companies involved into social sector (S.N.Kovalev is a Vice-director of Konstantinovsky palace complex, I.A.Yatskevich – Vice-director of Peter and Paul's fortress development fund, G.E.Chernov – General Director of PLC Corporation-Hotel , the Russian shareholder of Radisson SAS Hotel, V.I.Vilenchik - Vice Managing Director of Vneshtorgbank subsidiary). It allows professionals to share their experience and perform new ideas before students.

Today the chair follows two directions in its development. On the one hand it continues to enhance organization management studies, on the other hand over the last 2 years it has been training experts on the new major “Social and cultural service and tourism”.

The main principle is that we train experts in the field of social and cultural service and tourism who have strong economic background. The core major implies technical sills but since it is based in the leading economic university we can't fail to use the advantages and benefits it provides. Certainly we perform more economic disciplines than prescribed by the educational standard. Thus we train well educated specialists who are well-sought in the labour market.
